What is Osteopathy?

The American Osteopathic Association holds the following tenets:

  1. The body is a unit; the person is a unit of body, mind, and spirit.

  2. The body is capable of self-regulation, self-healing, and health maintenance.

  3. Structure and function are reciprocally interrelated.

  4. Rational treatment is based upon an understanding of the basic principles of body unity, self-regulation, and the interrelationship of structure and function.

Starting the first week of osteopathic medical school, osteopathic physicians learn how to diagnose and treat people with our hands.  This happens in parallel to the usual medical school courses of anatomy, pathophysiology, pharmacology, microbiology, etc.  Our board-certified physicians are licensed by the Oregon Medical Board.  We bring the whole -person approach to everyone we see.  We can order further testing or referrals as necessary.

What can a patient expect?

At your initial visit, your physician will discuss your symptoms, as well as your pertinent medical and surgical history. We will perform a structural exam and begin treating right away. Some people feel an immediate improvement, although many notice an improvement later in the day or the next day as the body integrates the changes we’ve made. For an acute issue, you may see significant improvement after one visit. For more chronic conditions, we will work on a longer-term treatment plan, often including home exercises.

We encourage patients to wear comfortable clothes suitable for hands-on manipulation and movement.

OUR DOCTORS

Dan Sengenberger, DO

Dr. Dan was introduced to osteopathy while a pre-med student in Portland.  He graduated from the Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2005.

After serving 8 years on active duty as a Naval Officer (including deployment to Afghanistan), he joined La Clinica in Medford as a family physician.  He provided osteopathic treatments to patients from all walks of life.  After 9 years, he knew it was time to expand into full-time osteopathic medicine, joining the practice in 2022.

Dr. Dan's motto is, "I'll see anyone for anything." He is particularly interested in cranial osteopathy, following the philosophies of Drs. Rollin Becker and James Jealous.  For certain cases, he also offers trigger point injections ("dry needling") or steroid joint injections.

Dr. Dan is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine.

Mick Juarez, DO

Dr. Juarez attended medical school at Rocky Vista University where he earned his degree in Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. He then went on to complete his residency program at Michigan State University specializing in Osteopathic Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine (ONMM).

In practice, Dr. Juarez treats varying ailments and incorporates both an integrative and a functional medicine approach to his care. He focuses on improving the body's ability to function via Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine, Cranio-sacral medicine, and varying injection-based therapies for all ages - the end result aimed at improving the quality of life of his patients.

Dr. Juarez likes reminding his community that pain is not the only reason to come see an osteopathic doctor. He encourages athletes, musicians, students, manual laborers, teachers, healthcare professionals, and anyone else wishing to explore whether their daily life or performance can be improved upon to reach out for more information.

To his young and new families, Dr. Juarez particularly enjoys offering neonatal care and has the motto "there is no such thing as a colicky baby. It is a headache, neck pain, or something of the like until proven otherwise." Feeding difficulties and misshapen heads (plagiocephaly) are other neonatal areas of interest.

April Smith, DO

Dr. April graduated from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Bradenton, Florida in 2009 and completed her residency in Family Medicine and OMM at Advent Health East Orlando in 2012. From there, she opened her own primary care and Osteopathic manipulation practice in Orlando.  Since 2023, she has been an assistant professor of osteopathic medicine at the Orlando College of Osteopathic Medicine.  Over several visits to Ashland, she fell in love with the place and the people, and will make this beautiful area her full time home in June 2026.

Dr. April has special interests in cranial osteopathic manipulative medicine and traditional osteopathy. Helping patients with complex trauma has been a particular focus. Her experience also includes treating newborns with a wide range of conditions, such as feeding difficulties and cranial deformities. She follows in the footsteps of her mentors Drs. Olixn Adams, James Jealous, William T. Crow, Laura Rampil, and Juanita Brown.

She is a past president of the Florida Academy of Osteopathy. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Osteopathic Cranial Academy. Since 2024, she has been  teaching the Introductory Course for the Osteopathic Cranial Academy.

Dr. April has an established personal meditative practice and calls it her “lifeline.” Her hobbies include knitting and crocheting, Star Wars, and tree hugging.

Marc Heller, DC

Dr. Heller has been a chiropractor for 45 years. He was introduced to osteopathic lower force methods by Dr. Steve Thomas 25 years ago, and has studied osteopathic methods extensively, including studying visceral manipulation with the French osteopaths. He does gently move bones; he does not pop or crack joints.

Dr. Heller is also a rehab coach and teaches all of his patients what they can do to help themselves. He has studied with Dr. Stu McGill, who wrote the Back Mechanic. He has studied with multiple physical therapy teachers.

Dr. Heller has used soft tissue therapies for his whole career. His current favorite is focused shock wave, which helps restart healing in old injuries. This is effective for many chronic hard-to-heal injuries, including plantar fasciitis, Sacro-Iliac problems, and shoulder tendonitis.

Dr. Heller specializes in care for active older folks (and is one). He hikes, bikes, swims, and skis. Older people who want to be healthy have to use their muscles.

Dr. Heller is passionate about his work and plans to continue. He specializes in the lower back (including the lumbar discs, facet joints, the Sacro-Iliac, the hip, and the coccyx) at least partially due to his own challenges. He wrote for over 20 years more than 140 articles for a national chiropractic trade journal, Dynamic Chiropractic.
